YMCA Offers Free Water Safety Course

NEW CASTLE, Pa., DEC. 23, 2010 – We invite families to SPLASH into the New Year at the New Castle Community YMCA, Jan. 3 to 7. Join us for a free, week-long course designed to teach children and their families to be safer in and around water. You and your family will learn basic swimming skills, backyard and public pool safety, beach safety, boating safety and more through games and other activities.

Russ Hopkins, director of aquatics, said, “Over 3,000 fatal, unintentional drownings occur every year in the U.S. and of those, one in four are children age 14 and younger. At the Y, we believe one death is too many! We’re here to provide the tools and resources necessary to keep you and your family safe in the water.”

The SPLASH safety course will meet Jan. 3 to 7 at 4 p.m. at the YMCA Downtown Pool. The Y recommends children be at least preschool age to benefit most from the course. Class size is limited so please call 724.658.4766 or email rhopkins@ncymca.org to register today. To learn more about swim lessons, water fitness and recreational programs for your family, go to www.ncymca.org.
