Summer Initiatives

This summer the Y is expanding our efforts to serve local children and families by implementing several new programs for the community.

7th Grade Initiative

The New Castle Community YMCA is excited to offer FREE summer memberships to every 7th Grade Student in the New Castle Area School District. We recognize that the transition from 7th to 8th grade is a critical time in a child's life and want to offer these students a safe, supportive environment. We are working in partnership with AmeriCorps to provide additional staff and programs to offer the new teen members an opportunity to workout in the wellness center (after completing an orientation), take raquetball lessons, swim, enjoy downtime in the youth lounge, and play basketball and other sports.

Research shows that seventh-grade is a critical time in a young person’s life when exposure to risk factors or influences, that have been shown to increase the likelihood for unhealthy behaviors. Through this positive, proactive and strength-based approach, the Y aims to buffer young people from the effects of risk exposure by providing them with opportunities to be involved in, and contribute to, their community and their peer group in meaningful ways. To learn more about this initiative, please contact Michelle Swogger at mswogger@ncymca.org.

Summer Meal Program

We are excited to announce that beginning June 12, our downtown branch will serve as a Summer Meal Program Site offering free lunch to children and teens age 18 and younger. Children need good nutrition all year long, however when school is out, many children lose access to the meals provided by the school lunch program. That's why we're happy to work in partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to help fill that gap. Lunch will be provided Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at 20 West Washington Street, New Castle, PA 16010. This program is free and open to anyone age 18 or younger. No pre-registration required.

Summer Learn-to-Swim

Another new program we're offering this summer is FREE swim instruction and water safety classes for children who live in local housing developments. According to the Centers for Disease Control, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death of children ages 1-14. With the City of New Castle having three streams/rivers running through it, we need to ensure that children understand water safety and are equipped with basic swim skills. The Y is working to save lives by offering swim instruction to local children who otherwise may not have the means to take swim lessons. In addition to providing swim and safety instruction, this program includes transportation and swim suits for those who need them. We are currently accepting donations of new/gently used swim suits - learn more. To learn more about this program, please contact Drew Sapp at dsapp@ncymca.org

These new programs and services would not be possible without the support of our Annual Youth Campaign donors. Thanks to everyone who has contributed -- your gift is impacting local youth! There's still time to support these efforts, donate today!
